How an HBCU Grad Overcame Imposter Syndrome to Become a Dentist

On this special Women’s History Month episode of The HBCU Man Cave, we invited Dr. Tiara Felder, an HBCU alum and dedicated dentist, to discuss her inspiring journey into the field of dentistry. As a first-generation college student and a non-traditional applicant, Dr. Felder faced numerous obstacles—including years of rejection before finally being accepted into dental school. But one of the biggest challenges she encountered wasn’t academic—it was imposter syndrome.

“I would say one of the biggest challenges was in dental school, having imposter syndrome. I think just me being a first-generation student and also non-traditional—it took me at least three years to get accepted after undergrad. And once I got there, I’d compare myself to my white counterparts and wonder: Am I supposed to be here?”

Despite these doubts, Dr. Felder pushed through, proving to herself and others that she not only belonged but that she could thrive. Now, as a practicing dentist, she still faces subtle challenges—like patients questioning her credentials because she “looks young”—but she’s learned to embrace her success with confidence.

Beyond her work in dentistry, Dr. Felder is also an author, having written Bailey’s Big Bright Smile, a children’s book that helps kids overcome dental anxiety. She is passionate about patient-centered care, serving diverse communities, and inspiring the next generation of Black professionals in healthcare.

This episode is a powerful conversation about resilience, representation, and redefining success on your own terms.
