Sheryl Lee Ralph Sparks $25K Giving Spree at Norfolk State University Commencement

What started as a heartfelt gesture from Emmy-winning actress Sheryl Lee Ralph quickly became a powerful wave of generosity at Norfolk State University’s 2025 commencement ceremony.

During her keynote address, Ralph learned that the graduating class had fallen just short of their $5,000 fundraising goal for the Senior Class Gift, a contribution to support future Spartans through the Proud to Pay Legacy Book Scholarship fund. Without hesitation, Ralph pledged $1,000 to help close the gap, surpassing what was needed.

Her bold act of generosity set off a chain reaction. University President Dr. Javaune Adams-Gaston and NSU Board of Visitors Rector Bishop Kim Brown immediately matched her gift with $1,000 donations of their own.

In a matter of minutes, the audience was swept up in the moment. Hands flew into the air as attendees spontaneously pledged contributions, many shouting out their donations mid-ceremony.

Within just eight minutes, over $25,000 had been raised, five times the original goal.

University President Dr. Javaune Adams-Gaston shared her excitement:

“We have witnessed how powerful the spirit of generosity and the desire to see our students succeed can be. I am thankful to Ms. Ralph and all those who found it in their hearts to give.”

The funds will go toward the Senior Class Gift through the Proud to Pay Legacy Book Scholarship, helping ensure that future NSU students can access the books and resources they need to thrive.

It was a powerful reminder that when one person leads with heart, others will follow.
