Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) education have been greatly affected by the outbreak of the COVID 19 pandemic. On Thursday, McDonald’s announced their launch of $500,000 scholarship through Black& positively Golden scholarship fund, to support the students in this academic year (2020/2021) In addition to this, McDonald’s anticipates to partner with ESSENCE girls in an attempt to support entrepreneurial students with virtual events, mentorship, and capital. In the press, Marissa Fisher , a second generation McDonalds franchisee who has four restaurants in southeastern Louisiana, said that education is the key to victory.
However, with the rise of the COVID 19 pandemic, many students’ return to classes is uncertain. The HBCU students will be affected mostly among other students. McDonald’s has been of great benefit to the HBCU students throughout their lives. This program aims to ease the stress contributed by the COVID 19 pandemic as schools near reopening.
Harry Williams, the president and CEO of Thurgood Marshall College Fund said “This year’s donations are taken more serious due to the present issues of COVID19 pandemic, and continued civil unrest for racial equality. The black students and associates from all over the world are urging companies to do much more than giving statements and running adverts. Thus, the TMCF is enthusiastic about advancing our commitment to McDonald’s to support black students to continue with a college education”. Interested HBCU students can apply for the black and positively golden bursaries before the 3rd of August.
