“The Campus Rundown Show” by Historically Black Since is a weekly talk show run by HBCU students for HBCU students and alumni. This show runs every Tuesday of the week on both Instagram and YouTube Live. This current episode, which aired two days ago, was all about homecoming. Titled “ Homecoming 101: Do’s and Don’ts as a College Student.”.  In this episode, the three hosts, Darion Graham  (a Livingstone College student) , Hadassah Meralus (an Alabama A&M student), and Mi’Jan  ( MJ)  Credle (a Bowie State student), discuss their dos and don’ts for homecoming at their various HBCUs.

Top three things HBCU students should do to enjoy Homecoming week

  • Hadassah’s three: “Plan the events you want to go to, plan your outfits, and pre-plan your assignments.”
  • Darion’s three: take care of assignments, network, and stay hydrated.
  • MJ’s three:  “ don’t spend a bag on homecoming; explore the events, drink enough water, and eat.”

Tips for Tailgate and  football games

During homecoming at an HBCU, students emphasized the importance of networking at tailgates as a key opportunity to build lasting connections with peers, alumni, and professionals. They highlighted how homecoming is not just about celebrating school pride, but also about strategically engaging with alumni who can offer mentorship, internships, or job opportunities. “Take advantage  of an opportunity and you just never know where it could go. These people only come once a year,” stated Darion. By mingling at tailgates and sharing experiences, students can leverage these connections to further their careers and academic goals. At the same time, they expressed the importance of showing school pride by participating in the game-day activities, proudly representing their institution while creating meaningful relationships that could impact their future. Homecoming, with its blend of tradition and professional growth, is an ideal moment to take advantage of the doors that open through networking, all while celebrating the spirit of the HBCU community.

Things learned  from Freshman year to  now regarding homecoming

As students reflected on their growth from freshman year to now, they shared valuable insights about making the most of HBCU homecoming. Hadassah emphasized the importance of tailgating early and leaving by halftime, advising that students should support vendors because they’re only present at certain times of the year. Darion agreed, adding that networking and talking to other people during homecoming is essential to maximizing the experience. Building these connections can lead to opportunities beyond college. MJ pointed out that if friends aren’t available to attend an event, students shouldn’t let that stop them from going. This mindset encourages students to not limit themselves and to fully engage in the experience. Darion also stressed the importance of getting active in homecoming events, as these moments foster community involvement and create lasting memories. Overall, the students agreed that homecoming is not just about having fun but also about putting yourself out there, forming new relationships, and taking advantage of every opportunity college offers. It’s a time to be bold, present, and proud, all while connecting with the unique spirit of an HBCU.

FOMO and Mindfulness

During homecoming, it’s crucial for students to be mindful of their interactions with others, recognizing the importance of balancing social engagement with personal well-being. Darion emphasized this by saying, “Practice self-care and be mindful,” reminding students that while homecoming is a time for celebration and connection, it’s equally important to take care of themselves mentally and emotionally. Being aware of how you interact with others—whether it’s networking with alumni, supporting peers, or meeting new people—can impact your overall experience and those around you. Practicing self-care helps maintain balance, ensuring that students don’t feel overwhelmed or burned out during the festivities. Awareness allows students to stay grounded, engage meaningfully with their environment, and protect their mental health while still enjoying the excitement of homecoming.

Prioritizing Events and Academics During Homecoming

Hadassah emphasized the importance of prioritizing both events and academics during homecoming by saying, “It’s homecoming, I want to be at these events, but I also want to make sure that I’m doing something for me.” This reflects the need for students, especially student leaders and those in organizations, to find a balance between participating in homecoming festivities and staying on top of personal and academic responsibilities. Effective communication and planning are key to ensuring that students can enjoy the excitement of homecoming while also prioritizing their well-being and long-term goals. It’s essential to know when to take part in events and when to focus on yourself, ensuring a fulfilling and productive college experience.

Explore off campus

During homecoming season, students should explore off-campus events, like parties and after-parties, to fully experience the excitement of the festivities. Hadassah mentioned that “the homecoming parties and after parties, it’s better than any other party during the school year,” highlighting how these events offer a unique opportunity to enjoy yourself. However, it’s equally important to stay safe while doing so. Darion emphasized the importance of safety, advising students to “travel as a group and know your crowd.” With so many people around during homecoming, staying with friends is crucial for safety and ensuring you have a fun, secure experience while making the most of off-campus opportunities.

Homecoming season at HBCUs is an incredible time filled with celebration, connection, and pride in the rich traditions of these institutions. As students immerse themselves in the festivities, it’s essential to prioritize safety while making the most of the experience. Enjoying yourself, whether at on-campus events or off-campus gatherings, contributes to lasting memories and valuable connections.
