Howard University alumna Taraji P. Henson and Phylicia Rashad surprised their fellow Bison with some great news: theatre arts major Trinity Garrison was awarded the Dr. Andrew Allen Scholarship on the Today with “Jenna and Friends” show.
The scholarship, established by Debbie Allen and Phylicia Rashad in honor of their late father, Dr. Andrew Allen, was created to support students majoring in the arts, helping them fund their education at the historically Black university.
“I am so grateful—that’s the only word that comes to mind,” Garrison Said
The scholarship has a special significance within the Howard University community, as it was also awarded to Taraji P. Henson during her time as a student. Henson, who has since become a globally renowned actress, shared a deeply personal story during the broadcast about how the scholarship helped her overcome significant challenges while pursuing her degree.
“I found myself pregnant in college, my junior year, and I really ran out of money. I didn’t know how I was going to finish,” Henson recalled. “I applied for the scholarship and I won it. That scholarship allowed me to finish school and continue chasing my dreams.” Henson stated
The emotional moment ended with Henson, Rashad, and Today host Jenna Bush Hager gathering together to reflect on the legacy of Howard University, a place that has birthed generations of Black excellence.
The ladies emphasized the importance of scholarships like the Dr. Andrew Allen Scholarship in empowering students to reach their full potential helping to ensure that future generations of students majoring in the arts have the resources they need to succeed.
