With a dominant performance, Jackson State obliterated South Carolina State 37-7 to win the MEAC/SWAC Challenge.
Jackson State proved that they are still one of the top HBCUs in the country.
Rapper Diddy, also known as Sean Combs, kept his promise and donated $1 million to Jackson State presenting the check at the MEAC/SWAC Challenge.
During the 2022 BET Awards, Diddy announced that he would donate to his alma mater, Howard University and Jackson State.
Diddy kept his promise to Jackson State and delivered.
“If it wasn’t for HBCUs, I wouldn’t be here,” Diddy told ESPN.
Jackson State came away with the win and a $1 million investment into their program.
Quarterback Jason Brown led the win for the Tigers.
Brown was awarded player of the game after making his first start for the Tigers.
In his debut, he passed for 361 yards and 3 touchdowns. The Tigers’ season looks bright with Brown leading the charge.
“It feels amazing having the opportunity to come out here and execute this offense. We put some points on the scoreboard and I think we could be better. Brown said via NCAA Digital.
Brown set a MEAC/SWAC Challenge record for the highest completion percentage in the win over South Carolina State.
“I was seeing everything I was taught. Our coaches did an amazing job of letting us know what coverages they were going to be in and I was able to see it very clearly.” Brown said via NCAA Digital.
Jackson State also rushed for 138 yards, led by running back Irv Mulligan’s 109 yards and touchdown.
Running back Irv Mulligan started the night off with a 46-yard touchdown to the house to put the Tigers up 7-0 in the 1st quarter.
South Carolina State entered the second quarter with a ton of momentum after Linebacker Adonis Davis forced a fumble with a punch on Jackson State wide receiver Duke Miller.
Cornerback Marquis Bradley recovered the ball at the Jackson State 43-yard line.
South Carolina State could not get anything going on the offensive side ending the first half scoreless.
Jackson State tight end Jency Riley took an RPO dump off pass 35 yards to the house to put the Tigers up 14-0 with 10:11 remaining in the 2nd quarter.
Kicker Gerardo Baeza wrapped up the first half with a 31-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to put the Tigers up 17-0 to end the half.
Defensively, Jackson State was bringing the force. South Carolina State quarterback Corey Fields was pressured by numerous Jackson State defenders all game.
Jackson State entered the 3rd quarter, taking less than three minutes for the Tigers to go 63 yards in six plays. Quarterback Jason Brown found tight end D.J. Stevens for 21 yards, putting the Tigers up 24-0.
The Tigers extended their lead 31-0 in the third quarter with a 44-yard touchdown pass from Jason Brown to Andre Hunt.
The Tigers finished the third quarter with a field goal leading South Carolina State 34-0 entering the fourth quarter.
After struggling through three quarters, South Carolina State made a quarterback switch from Corey Fields to Andre Washington after an interception that put them in a deeper hole.
A very slow start to the season for South Carolina State with tons of young players on their roster.
Jackson State remained disciplined and took home their first win under new head coach T.C Taylor with many more wins in their future.
