The Alabama Greek Picnic, held this year from Thursday, August 8, to Sunday, August 11, 2024, is more than just a gathering—it’s a celebration of unity, culture, for members of Black Greek Lettered Organizations. Founded in 2018 by TeMarcus and Shumaine Pruitt, both HBCU graduates and proud members of Greek-letter organizations, the Alabama Greek Picnic has quickly become a staple event for the Greek community and beyond.
The Alabama Greek Picnic was born out of a deep passion for both their fraternity and sorority and a desire to create something meaningful for their community. TeMarcus, a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., and Shumaine, a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., are college sweethearts who graduated from Stillman College, an HBCU rich in tradition and pride. Their shared experiences and love for their alma mater laid the foundation for what would become a celebrated annual event.
Since its inception, the picnic has stood out with its unique motto, “We Picnic Different.” This year, the main picnic, held on Saturday, August 10, featured classic games such as musical chairs and tug of war, bringing out the competitive and playful sides of attendees.
The Pruitts are not just the masterminds behind the Alabama Greek Picnic; they are also successful entrepreneurs. In 2016, TeMarcus was let go from his coaching position, a moment that could have been devastating but instead sparked a new beginning. Tee and Shumaine launched The Kloset, a brand that has since expanded to three locations: one on the campus of Miles College, another at their alma mater, Stillman College, and a flagship store in downtown Birmingham, AL.
The Kloset’s logo features a door opening, symbolizing the Pruitts’ belief that “when one door closes, another one opens.” This philosophy has been the driving force behind their success, both with their business and the Alabama Greek Picnic. What began as a small event has grown into a major annual gathering, drawing Greeks from across the nation to celebrate, network, and give back to the community.
In addition to the festivities, the Alabama Greek Picnic is also a platform for giving back. The Pruitts have incorporated a non-profit initiative into the event, reflecting their deep commitment to making a positive impact on the community. Through this initiative, they aim to support local causes, provide scholarships, and offer resources to those in need.
