Disney+ recently hosted an HBCU-focused roundtable for its latest series, Wonderman, bringing together five HBCU journalists for an exclusive conversation with the show’s star, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Students, including Trenity Pender (Dillard University), Kyndal Parks(PVAMU), Sydney Frank (Hampton University), Kaylin Jean-Louis(FAMU), and Historically Black Since’s own Malik Davis (Norfolk State University), had the opportunity to ask Yahya about the series, his role, and the depth of his character, Simon, the character he plays on the show.
The roundtable was hosted by Delaware State University alum Loren Lorosa, who has recently taken over co-hosting duties on The Breakfast Club. During the discussion, LoRosa also shared inspiring words with the next generation of journalists and media personalities, emphasizing the importance of representation, preparation, and owning your voice in the industry.
Although Yahya did not attend an HBCU, he earned a degree in architecture from the University of California, Berkeley, before pursuing his passion for acting at the Yale School of Drama, where he graduated with a Master of Fine Arts degree.
In addition, Yahya is a proud member of the Divine Nine.
The actor is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., having crossed in Fall 2005 through the Alpha Epsilon Chapter at the University of California, Berkeley.
