Stephen A. Smith returns to his roots as ESPN’s hit show brings national spotlight to HBCU campuses this fall
ESPN’s morning show First Take is hitting the road and heading straight to the heart of HBCU culture.
First Take, hosted by Stephen A. Smith and Molly Qerim, will broadcast live from four Historically Black Colleges and Universities this fall, the show’s largest HBCU tour to date.
Stephen A. Smith, a proud graduate of Winston-Salem State University, has long honored HBCUs and their cultural impact. Before becoming one of the most recognized voices in sports media, Smith was a basketball player for the Winston-Salem State Rams under Hall of Fame coach Clarence Gaines.
After a career-ending knee injury, he turned to journalism, writing for the school newspaper, The News Argus.

Norfolk State University – Thursday, August 28
Location: Norfolk, Virginia
First Take will be on-site as the Spartans open their football season against Towson University. All eyes will also be on the sidelines as former NFL quarterback Michael Vick makes his head coaching debut at NSU. Earlier this year, Vick was announced as a 2025 College Football Hall of Fame inductee.

Location: Legion Field, Birmingham, Alabama
Features Alabama A&M facing off against Alabama State. First Take will be live from Birmingham, giving national exposure to this iconic matchup.
Delaware State University – Wednesday, October 29
Location: Dover, Delaware
The show will broadcast from campus just ahead of the Hornets’ game against Norfolk State on October 30, set to be played at Lincoln Financial Field.
Bethune-Cookman University – Thursday, November 20
Location: Daytona Beach, Florida
First Take will be live on campus in the lead-up to the Wildcats’ rivalry showdown with Florida A&M on November 22 — one of the season’s most anticipated matchups.
