Alabama A&M head women’s basketball coach Dawn Thornton is known for more than just her presence on the sidelines — she’s also become a game-day standout for her effortlessly fashionable looks, bringing confidence and polish to every whistle and timeout. But style aside, Coach Thornton’s impact speaks loudest in the results. In her first season at Alabama A&M (2024–25), she set a program record for the most wins in a single season since the program moved to Division I, signaling a new era for Bulldog women’s basketball.
In our My Favorite Things series, Coach Thornton gives us a closer look at the routines, influences, and values that shape her leadership — both on and off the court.
Favorite pre-game meal or post-game food spot?
Pre-game, Coach Thornton keeps it clean and intentional.
“Something clean and light — salmon or grilled chicken with veggies.”
After the game, though, honesty kicks in.
“I’m not pretending… tacos or a good Southern meal if we earned it. I love soul food.”
Favorite music genre or artist to get in the zone?
Her playlist reflects balance — spiritually and competitively.
“R&B for my spirit, hip-hop for my edge. A little Mary J. Blige, a little Jeezy — balance.”
Favorite NBA, WNBA, or college basketball player (past or present)?
For Coach Thornton, the blueprint is clear.
“Dawn Staley. Leader. Champion. Culture builder. That’s the blueprint.”
Favorite pre-game or practice tradition?
Some of the most powerful moments happen in silence.
“That quiet moment before we take the floor — locking eyes with my staff and players. No words needed. I like to ask everyone how they are feeling.”
Favorite moment when the band or crowd shifted the energy in the gym?
Anyone who’s experienced HBCU basketball knows this feeling.
“When the band hits that one song and the whole gym moves at once — NECK. You can literally feel momentum change.”
Favorite atmosphere you’ve coached in?
Home means more than location — it’s community.
“The Dawg Pound at home. When our fans are locked in, it’s different. It’s family.”
Favorite part of coaching at an HBCU?
Her answer goes beyond wins and losses.
“Pouring into young Black women who will change the world — not just win games.”
Favorite lesson basketball has taught you about life?
The game has a way of revealing truth.
“Pressure doesn’t break you — it reveals you.”
Favorite way to relax during the off-season?
Rest is both physical and spiritual.
“Travel, sunshine, good food, and being still long enough to hear God clearly again.”
Favorite thing fans would be surprised to learn about you?
Behind the fire is softness and purpose.
“I’m a soft girl at heart. The fire you see is purpose — not ego.”
Coach Dawn Thornton’s leadership reflects the heart of HBCU culture: intentional, grounded, and deeply rooted in purpose. This is more than a coaching philosophy — it’s a calling.
