Spelman alum Ciara Smith becomes Anniston’s first Black and youngest Mayor at 26

Ciara Smith, a 2020 Spelman College graduate, was sworn in as the first Black and youngest mayor in Anniston history this past May at age 26.

Born and raised in Anniston, Smith graduated from Anniston High School before attending Spelman. She began working in the city’s finance department at 16, an experience that gave her her first glimpse into public service and community leadership.

Smith was first elected to the Anniston City Council in 2020, representing the Third Ward at just 21 years old. She also served as vice mayor, a role that positioned her to succeed former Mayor Jack Draper after his resignation this past summer.

According to her campaign website, Smith has focused on building public-private partnerships and prioritizing neighborhood revitalization.

Spelman College President Rosalind Brewer celebrated Smith’s achievement, highlighting her trailblazing accomplishments.

“I am proud to congratulate Ciara Smith, C’2020, on making history as Anniston’s first African American and youngest mayor,” Brewer said in a statement. “A shining example of Spelman leadership in action — breaking barriers and shaping the future.”

Smith said she plans to continue her efforts to strengthen Anniston’s future through community development and service, building on nearly a decade of civic involvement.
